A professor at West Virginia Wesleyan has received a $50,000 grant to study the remnant of a supernova.
The Chandra Grant will help Dr. Tracey Delaney study Cassiopeia A by granting use of archival data taken from 10 years of observation from NASA's Chandra X-Ray Observatory.
Dr. Delaney said the partial 3-D computer model will help her figure out what causes stars to explode.
"When we look at a picture it's flat. But the 3-D picture is what's going to fill in these blanks and that's what we want to do. We need to fill in the blanks of how these stars explode, and filling in the 3-D pictures is one of doing that," Delaney said.
Delaney and a student will spend the next two years continuing the research with astronomers.
