FAIRMONT -

The 'Ice Bowl' is held every year to raise money for Fairmont's Soup Opera at the Seth Burton Disc Golf Complex in Fairmont.

The course holds a special place in the hearts for the Burton family.

"We lost our son in 1998 in a car accident and we have built this disc golf course in his memory with the help of the community," said Rebecca Burton, Seth's mother and the organizer of the Ice Bowl.

Tommy Palank is a disc golfer at West Virginia University and came to play in the Ice Bowl with his fellow teammates.

"Disc golf is basically like regular golf except we play with Frisbees and we play with a basket," said Palank. "It's basically whoever can get to the basket in the least amount of strokes, least amount of throws. It's really just like regular golf, it's great exercise. It's kind of a new sport, its definitely a growing sport."

Each year, the Soup Opera donates a little something back to the bowl for the event.

"Every year the Soup Opera makes chili. "So we have vegetarian, as well as meat chili, and cornbread," said Burton. "It's a nice meal for the guys when they come in from their first round."

All proceeds of the event benefit the Soup Opera in Fairmont. It provides a hot meal and basic necessities to help people in need.

Burton's goal this year was $2,000. With 45 golfers that came out to play on Saturday, she thinks they surpassed that goal.

"I want to thank the supporters of this event and the folks that come out and play regularly and work on the course," said Burton. "These two 18 hole disc golf courses have been built by volunteer hours."

The disc golf complex is located at Morris Park and is always open to the public.
