FAIRMONT -

The Marion County Special Olympics hosted a basketball tournament Saturday at Fairmont State University.

This is the fourth year Marion County has hosted the tournament.

Twelve teams from six counties competed in the contest, which helps them prepare for the upcoming state tournament.

One athlete said he's looking forward to the state Special Olympics.

"I'll get a gold medal and I'm going to try my best. It makes me feel good and I'll make new friends," said Josh Howell, Upshur County Special Olympics.

Volunteers from West Virginia University athletics were at the tournament, along with Fairmont State football players who served at the referees.

The state basketball tournament will be held March 22 through the 24th.
