US Airways and American Airlines have announced plans to merge.
This $11 billion deal will create the world's largest airline.
Since 2001, ten airlines have merged into only four carriers.
Brad Gilbert is a professor of aviation at Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community and Technical college.
He said airline professionals were predicting the number of major airlines to decrease over time.
"This was prophesied a long time ago, back in the late 70s, just a few of the major carriers surviving the deregulation process, and that's what we have today," Gilbert said.
He said there are definitely some positive aspects of the airlines merging. '
"Some of it's going to be really good because they do fly different route structures...so, I think it's going to be good on an international basis. It's going to be good for American Airlines for sure, to help them come out of bankruptcy," Gilbert mentioned.
He also pointed out some potential problems.
"Blending their fleet, blending their maintenance, inventories of equipment, that's going to be a big issue for them because they fly different types of airplanes," Gilbert added.
