Morgantown City Council has approved an ordinance Tuesday to amend a section of its fire code.

City Manager Jeff Mikorski said the ordinance will clear up any misunderstanding about malicious burning.

The ordinance also will increase the fine for malicious burning from $1,000 to $2,000, pending approval from the State Fire Marshal's Office.

"It's not only couches but its dumpsters. Situations where people don't realize that lighting something on fire could actually injure people or kill people. You never know what's in those dumpsters," Mikorski said.

Mikorski also said the city greatly discourages malicious burning and that West Virginia University students also could face school punishments for malicious burning.
