MVB MVP: Bridgeport Swimmer Frank Csonka

BRIDGEPORT -

The pool can be a scary place for some people. But for Frank Csonka he's at his best when he's in the water, and he's got the hardware to prove it.

"For the 50, I was really hoping and I thought I could win it," Csonka said. "But for the rest, I was just more hopeful. I wasn't really sure what the outcome was going to be. So seeing that I was first place was really awesome."

Frank dominated both the 50 yard and 100 yard freestyle events during the state meet last week in Morgantown. He then followed that up with an unbelievable finish while anchoring the 400 yard freestyle relay, coming from three body-lengths back to give Bridgeport the state championship. He said the difference between being a good swimmer opposed to a great one, involves mental preparation.

"I think it's a different mindset that a lot of people don't really seem to get," Csonka said. "How to figure out how excited or how focused they need to get for an event in order to get the best swim that they can."

Frank may be the best swimmer in the state, but he may not even be the top dog in his own family. His sisters Brittany and Michelle, along with his brother Matt were all relay champions. But he does have one thing they don't have.

"I'm the only one who has won an individual state title," he said.

"All of his siblings were state champions with me. So that was the end of an era. That was even more sad and a great win because it was the end of their era," Bridgeport head coach Jan Grisso said.

A family tree built around domination, one swimming meet at a time.
