ELKINS -

The Randolph County Sheriff's Department has arrested an Elkins man who escaped during a hearing in Randolph County Circuit Court on Thursday.

Derrick Armstrong, 35, was found behind an outbuilding of his girlfriend's house on Harpertown Road, according to Sheriff Mark Brady.

Brady said after a short foot pursuit and altercation, Armstrong was taken into custody and transported to jail.

Armstrong appeared in court on two counts of domestic battery. Brady said after Armstrong tested positive for drugs, a judge ordered him to jail.

Before being transported, he was taken to a restroom.  He then eluded his jailer and escaped the courthouse.

Armstrong is now in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail.
