The Charleston Area Alliance energy efficiency initiative
will host free workshops in Charleston from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday,
Feb. 23.
The
workshops are part of Energy Efficiency in the East End, or e4, a new
initiative that pits East End blocks against one
another to compete for the largest reduction in energy consumed. Each
East End block will have a block captain that will be responsible for creating
excitement, driving the competitive spirit, disseminating competition info and
collecting data.
At
the free Feb. 23 workshops, energy enthusiast Jeff Barrie will take participants
through the inspirational and technical minutiae of energy efficiency.
At
9:30 at the Charleston Area Alliance office at 1116 Smith Street, meet Barrie
and view his film "Kilowatt Ours," in which he explores the source of our
electricity and the problems caused by energy production. Along the way Barrie
encounters individuals, businesses, organizations and communities that are
leading the way, using energy conservation, efficiency and renewable power all
while saving money and the environment.
At 10:30 at the alliance office, Green Your
Home…with Dollar Bills! Barrie will let people into his
inner circle and demystify the means to creating a more energy efficient home
with little to no-cost monetary investments. An Appalachian Power representative
will be on board to discuss ApCo's HomeSMART energy assessment that's available
to all homeowners. Barrie will leave participants with a checklist that will help us save money and energy and win the competition.
At a noon lunch at the Roosevelt
Community Center at 502 Ruffner Avenue, churches, businesses, organizations and
individuals will offer tastes, or "dips," of a variety of foods in exchange for
50-cent tickets purchased. Proceeds from the event will benefit after-school
and senior programs.
A third workshop at 1 p.m. at the East
End Bazaar is
titled Energy Efficiency Meets Creative Space. What is the connection
between art and energy efficiency? Work with Barrie and local
artists to create artistic pieces that representative the future of energy in
the Kanawha Valley. The event is open and appropriate for all ages.
Finally, at 2:30, harness the power of the
Re-Store at 301 Piedmont Road. Barrie, in partnership with Zegeer
Hardware, will lead an interactive "tour" of the Re-Store to provide
tips, insights and ideas about how to retrofit your home for energy efficiency,
DIY style. This workshop is action orientated with hands-on practice for energy
efficiency retrofits.
Other
partners in the e4 effort include: Appalachian Power; East End Community
Association; East End Main Street; Energy Efficient WV; Bridgemont Community
& Technical College and the City of Charleston.
