Adams Street 400 Block Demolition Nears Completion

FAIRMONT -

It's been five months since Reclaim Company in Fairmont began demolishing the historic 400 block of Adams Street.

Now, that part of the project is almost complete and a $25 million state office building will soon take its place.

"We had to do a lot of preliminary work, engineering work, there had to be a lot of work done, and the bidding process," said Randy Elliott, Marion County Commission president. "But if you look up there today, you can see the project coming to conclusion on the demolition part."

Reclaim Company began the demolition of the 400 Block last September and are now nearing completion.

"Last briefing from the architects, the contract for the site preparation is out there until April," said Jay Rogers, Fairmont City Manager.

The new state office building will be five stories high and bring more than 200 jobs to Fairmont.

"Providing employment is very important," Elliott said. "They're good paying jobs with benefits and we need all those we can get in Marion County."

Jay Rogers agrees.

"We're looking at bringing back the positions that were here in the old state office building," Rogers said. "A little over 200, close to 250 jobs back there."

City and county officials said they hope the new state office building will attract even more people and businesses to the area.

"While exciting as that is, the whole redevelopment of that block and what else that can spur on in that area of town," Rogers said.

"There will be more restaurants that I hope we will see come downtown," Elliott added. "The spin off from them being downtown is incredible. We need that traffic in downtown Fairmont."

The next step will be the bidding process for the structure.

The Marion County Commission said the projected completion date for the new state building is April of 2014.
