Marion County Commission Approves Hiring of Holding and Transport Officer

Posted: Updated:

After more than a decade, the historic Marion County jail is finally being put back to use.

It is being used as a transport and processing center for inmates who have been arrested.

At Wednesday's Marion County Commission meeting, the hiring of a holding and transport officer was approved.

This puts the staff up to six officers.

The sheriff's department began using the jail a few weeks ago but a few more officers are needed for it to be used to its full potential.

"We want to use it on two different shifts now so we're slowly implementing all the ideas about saving money by not having to make so many trips to the regional jail. It's working out fine. Another employee or two and we'll be able to go full speed with what our project is," said Randy Elliot, Marion County Commissioner.

The county spends nearly $50 a day for housing, food, and services for every inmate in North Central Regional.

Inmates can be held for up to six hours in the facility, saving the county money.
