It still pays to be involved in West Virginia University athletics.

The West Virginia Auditor's Office recently updated its listing of total compensation for all state employees with salaries from 2012.

According to the 2011 numbers, WVU men's basketball coach Bob Huggins topped that list with a salary of $1,836,000.22, and with a 2012 salary of $1,926,492.62, he's high on the list again.

But WVU's head football coach Dana Holgorsen received a big bump in salary. Holgorsen's 2011 salary ranked him second on the list, with $1,298,000.89 but his 2012 salary came in at $2,031,034.66.

WVU's Athletic Director Oliver Luck received the same $521,587.30 salary in both 2011 and 2012, according to the list, and so did WVU President James Clements, with a salary of $524,024.60 both years.

WVU's head women's basketball coach Michael Carey made $417,913.93 in both 2011 and 2012, and WVU's defensive coordinator for the football team, Jeff Casteel, made $431,400.94 in both years.

At Marshall University, salaries for president Stephen Kopp and men's basketball coach Tom Herrion were the same for 2012 as they were in 2011, $347,799.92 and $404,894.33, respectively.

In looking at state government, Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin's salary stayed the same, as it is set in statute at $150,000, but his wife, Joanne, president of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College, brought in a higher salary than he did in both 2011, with $158,670.92 and a little less in 2012, at $158,445.92, according to the auditor's office.

Jacqueline Proctor, who spent 2011 as Tomblin's communications director received a salary of $70,789.84, but in 2012 Proctor made $71,506.62 as a deputy commissioner for the West Virginia Department of Commerce.

Tomblin's current communications director, Amy Shuler Goodwin, made $79,221.50 in 2012.

Salaries went down across the board from 2011 to 2012 for Auditor Glen Gainer, Treasurer John Perdue, and former Agriculture Commissioner Gus Douglass, each close to $100,000. Secretary of State Natalie Tennant's $94,999.92 salary was the same in both 2011 and 2012.

Agriculture Commissioner Walt Helmick had a $24,650 salary as a state senator in 2012, so he stands to get quite an increase in 2013 in his new post.

And as Attorney General Patrick Morrisey continues to restructure that office, he's doing so in the shadow of a 2012 office wherein total salaries topped $11,885,288.24.
