Several elected officials issued statements March 4 in support of Hinton native Sylvia Mathews Burwell's nomination to be director of the White House Office of Management and Budget.
"West Virginians are proud of all that Ms. Burwell has accomplished, and to call her one of our own," U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., said in a news release. "Personally, I have known Ms. Burwell and her family for many years.
"She is the right person at the right time for a job that's so incredibly important."
Rockefeller said the country needs smart, strong leadership at the Office of Management and Budget, and Burwell understands the impact their decisions will have on businesses, jobs and families.
"I'm proud to call her a friend and to fully support her nomination, and I'm urging the Senate to act quickly in confirming her as head of the OMB," Rockefeller said.
U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., also issued a statement about Burwell, who was an intern for him at one time.
"Sylvia, a former intern of mine, has remained so well grounded by her West Virginia roots that no matter how high she climbs, she says her attention, focus and vision, in the end, come down to one question, ‘how will this affect Hinton?'" Rahall said in his news release. "All of us take a lot of pride in Sylvia's practical and sound reasoning."
And Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin also issued a statement about Burwell's nomination.
"Sylvia continues to show the world her true West Virginia spirit," Tomblin said in a news release. "And today, her education combined with her life experiences growing up in West Virginia have led her to, yet again, another amazing career achievement."
