Sergeant Todd May was killed a little more than a year ago in the line of duty for the Monongalia Sheriff's Department.

On Tuesday, family and friends gathered at Fairmont State University for a ceremony to dedicate donations made in May's memory.

The Sergeant Todd May Memorial Fund Committee spent the last year raising funds and put it toward an endowment scholarship in his name.

"The scholarship is in an endowment, which means that every year a Criminal Justice student will receive a scholarship in honor of Sgt. May," said Maria Rose, president of Fairmont State University.

A special ceremony was held to not only honor Sgt. May, but to announce the winner of the first scholarship: Tyler Hawkins.

"He was chosen by the faculty members in that program. It was because of the major that he has, he's a double major in Criminal Justice and National Security and Intelligence," said Rose.

Hawkins gave a speech and thanked May's family. He said he's honored to receive the first scholarship.

"It's very humbling and I have a lot of pride in it. I have a lot of great professors here that I know think highly of me, and I really work hard," said Hawkins, a senior at FSU.

In addition to the scholarship presentation, a plaque was dedicated to Sgt. May through the committee.

"We have a memorial plaque in our OSIX, Open Source Intelligence Exchange Lab, commemorating the service and the dedication of Sgt. May," Rose said.

Family members, friends, and members of the Monongalia County Sheriff's Department were all in attendance.

"These are his friends, his co-workers, supervisors. Everything you heard about Todd today and more is what he was. We're proud of him, we're proud of his service, we support his family, and we wanted to be here for that," said Al Kisner of the Monongalia County Sheriff's Department.

The committee raised $75,000, and $25,000 will go toward the scholarship.
