Philippi City Council discussed plans to build a new motel at its meeting Tuesday night.
Residents spoke for and against the proposed motel, which would be built on North Maple Street.
Property owner Shawn Mcpherson said that the current property is unlivable and that the new motel would create more jobs and revenue in Philippi.
"Putting this hotel in the downtown area will keep people in the downtown area so that when they wake up in the morning they can go eat. They can spend their gas money, they can do everything that would cause any kind of expenditure in the downtown area in Philippi instead of elsewhere," Mcpherson said.
City council has taken plans for the proposed motel under advisement. It will obtain more information and discuss it further at its next meeting.
