FSU Holds Celebration For Men's, Women's Basketball Teams

FAIRMONT -

For some basketball teams across the state, the WVIAC Tournament was the last time they will be taking the court for quite a while.

But the fun has just begun for two local teams.

Students, faculty, and fans gathered on the Fairmont State University campus to celebration the men and women's basketball seasons.

"Considering we weren't even there last year, it's really an achievement," said Dr. Maria Rose, FSU President.

Dozens of people packed FSU's Falcon Center to celebrate the success of the men and women's basketball teams.

"The most important is the fans and the community," said Chase Morgan, Fairmont State Point Guard. "Without them I don't think we would have the success we did have. It just shows how important the community really is and the fans and the support we have. It's one of a kind."

"To have the support means a lot," Kaitlin Snyder, Fairmont State Point Guard. "A lot of women's basketball programs, or a lot of women's programs in general don't seem to get as much support. To know that we have a lot of people behind us is excellent."

The Women's team left the Charleston Civic Center one week ago as WVIAC Champions.

Kaitlin Snyder said the win was great but the season is no where near over.

"It's the second one that I actually had in my four years of playing," Snyder said. "It's a great way to go out. We're not done yet."

The women's team will be playing in the NCAA Tournament next week.

But there's a twist. So will the men.

"I don't think we could ever imagine putting this team together in a month that we would be heading to the NCAA tournament and set the record for the most wins a first year," said Jerrod Calhoun, Fairmont State Head Coach. "so we're very happy but at the same time we're not satisfied. I think we have a good enough team to make a great post season run."

Athletes said the support the teams have for each other is something special.

"All congratulations to them," Morgan said. "They deserve it. They are a hard working team. For us, we have to keep working. We want to make some noise in the national tournament."

The women's team has earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament by capturing the WVIAC Tournament Title.

The men's team is expected to get an at large bid when the pairings come out Sunday night.
