Local University Notes Educational Differences on International Women's Day

Posted: Updated:

March 8 marked International Women's Day, and events were held around the world to celebrate the achievements of women.

A report by the "Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development" shows women have excelled in the education field.

On average, women from the OECD countries, including the U.S., Sweden, Spain, New Zealand, Denmark, Brazil, and Greece, are better educated than men.

Fairmont State University's student body has more women than men, and Christy Burner, the assistant director of recruitment and admissions, said it's definitely noticeable in some classes.

"We have more female-dominated classes, programs such as nursing, biological sciences, education. We have a 57 percent female to a 43 male ratio at Fairmont State," Burner said.

Burner added that she would like to see more males in these "female-dominated" classes and more females in the mostly male courses, which include aviation and criminal justice.
