Morgantown Mayor Jim Manilla joined U.S. Cellular and the
Mountaineer Boys and Girls Club to announce the winners of the 4th
annual Black History Month Art Contest.
In the month of February, club members were invited to
select an influential African-American and develop his or her likeness into an
original portrait using any art medium.
According to the news release, top 10 finalists' entries
were on display during February at area U.S. Cellular stores where the public
voted for their favorites.
The first place winner is Miah Kaehler from South Middle
School in Morgantown. Kaehler won a $500 gift certificate for a portrait of
Billie Holiday.
Kaehler won first place last year as well for her portrait
of Michelle Obama.
The second place winner is Jaheim Felton from Woodburn
Elementary School in Morgantown. Felton won a $200 gift certificate for a
portrait of Usher.
The third place winner is Camden Fitzgerald from Mt. View Elementary
School in Morgantown. Fitzgerald won a $150 gift certificate for a portrait of
Michael Jackson.
"We believe in partnering with the community to celebrate our county's rich
culture, heritage and diversity," Linda Click, area sales manager for U.S.
Cellular, said in the news release. "We are so impressed by the amazing
portraits the children create every year."
In the last four years, hundreds of club members have
participated in the contest. "Partnering with companies like U.S. Cellular help
us provide programs that can help inspire our members to research, explore and
express heroes through art," Malina Alexander, director of operations,
Mountaineer Boys & Girls Club, said in the release.
