Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to Salem International University Tuesday morning after a report of a bomb threat.

At 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, a security guard called 911 to report a bomb threat in an English class at Salem International University.

Police arrested John Richards, 33, of Clarksburg and charged him with possession of a hoax bomb, a misdemeanor. Richards could face up to a year in jail and/or a $5,000 fine. He'll also pay restitution for costs associated with first responders and law enforcement from Tuesday's events, according to Harrison County Prosecuting Attorney Joe Shaffer.

Richards threatened a class and left, according to authorities. A small black box was later found by law enforcement in his car. He told authorities his actions were part of a class presentation.

The Salem Police Department is the lead investigative agency, it is being assisted by the Harrison County Sheriff's Department and the West Virginia State Police. There are roughly 30 officers on duty handling the bomb threat.

Students were relocated to a safe area and are giving police statements about the incident.

Authorities don't believe that the SIU bomb threat is related to a report of a bomb threat the Doddridge County Division of Highways office Tuesday morning.

Richards was arraigned by a Harrison County Magistrate and released on $5,000 bail.
