Demolition Project Begins in Sunnyside Neighborhood

MORGANTOWN -

Demolition days have begun in Morgantown at the sight of new WVU student housing.

In October, WVU purchased nearly 40 parcels of land in the Sunnyside neighborhood to construct new student housing.

This week construction fences went up and demolition began.

Crews are currently working to remove hazardous materials and utilities.

"We'll see those buildings start to come down here in the next week, or few weeks," said director of housing Corey Farris. "That'll probably be the first thing that is noticeable. Then the graders will get out there and smooth out and carve out the dirt where the foundation will lay and then we'll watch the footers go in and the buildings come up."

WVU expects the housing to be open for fall of 2014. The project will cost roughly $70 million.
