Barrackville School Raises Awareness on World Down Syndrome Day

Posted: Updated:

Thursday was World Down Syndrome Day.

It recognizes people born with a third copy of the 21st chromosome.

The Barrackville School in Marion County held an event Thursday to raise awareness about the disability.

The interactive assembly focused on the fact that no one is alike and that it is wrong to make fun of people because they're different.

It also aims to eliminate the R-word from everyone's vocabulary.

"We are going to spread the word, to end the word. The word "retarded" which was developed by a physician, now through the years its slang and it's demeaning and it's mean. I just want to stress to the students of Barrackville School that we want to treat people the way they want to be treated," said Toni Toothman, Barrackville special educator.

The students were able to ask questions and afterward, signed a banner to join the campaign.
