WVIAC Spotlight: FSU Baseball in Discussions to Play Games at New Park in Morgantown

FAIRMONT -

The proposed baseball stadium is a project so big that it could include Fairmont State University. An invitation has yet to be extended, but FSU head baseball coach George Yanchak said a chance to play there would change Falcon baseball forever.

"Anytime that you have the opportunity to play somewhere that's nice and new, it's always exciting," Yanchak said. "Again, this weekend for example, we're going to be playing at a nice and new venue down in Beckley. One of our home games is going to be there because Mary Lou isn't going to be ready because of the weather conditions."

That's been the problem so far this Spring. The weather has not helped the cause for outdoor sports. The new baseball stadium in Morgantown would help alleviate that concern for the Falcons, which according to West Virginia University Deputy Athletic Director Mike Parsons, there has been some talk between the two sides, including high school baseball as well.

"Yes, there has been discussion with Fairmont State about using it. Also potentially American Legion here in Morgantown. Also with the WVSSAC about potentially using it for tournament play as well," Parsons said.

The stadium will be the home to a brand new minor league baseball team from the New York-Penn League. Project officials say they plan to break ground in 2014 with a goal to throw the first pitch in 2015. Whatever the plan may be, Yanchak points out a new stadium would bring nothing but good things to the University City.

"It's a great thing for the area. I commute from Morgantown daily, so the baseball field will be near my home, which will be great for my kids to see that. It's going to be great for the whole North Central West Virginia area to be able to go and watch professional baseball. Anything else that gets to be played in there, I'm sure the Legion tournament will be played in there. Hopefully the state baseball tournament will have a bid to be played there as well," Yanchak said.
