'Friends of McKinney Field' Hosts Benefit Concert

Posted: Updated:

A Taylor County organization held a concert on Wednesday to benefit McKinney Field in Grafton.

Just ten weeks ago, 'Friends of McKinney Field' began raising money to purchase a new turf football field for Grafton High School.

The goal was to raise $297,000. After generous donations and fundraising, it reached that goal last week.

"We've exceeded our goal right now by almost $65,000 and we can't be more pleased, we really can't," said John Bord, one of the main organizers.

Bord said that when the program first started he knew the goal would be reached easily.

"We realized that with the money coming in and how fast it was coming in, we knew we would reach it. It was almost like, ‘When would we reach it? What week would we reach it in?'" Bord said.

Now that the goal was reached any additional money will be used to purchase different things to improve the field.

"We wanted a soccer scoreboard, we also want mobile 25 second clocks that were wireless so there would be no electric on the field at all," said Bord.

Maintenance for the field is also necessary.

"Maintenance costs and replacement costs. We want to ensure that the people using the field now, and the future people will have the same benefit as a new field," said volunteer Jeff Isner.

The group held a concert on Wednesday to raise money for these costs. Local bands Shadrach and Taylor Made both took the stage in the Grafton High School Auditorium.

"We all three graduated from this high school, so anything to help out here, of course we wanted to, our alumni high school," said Wendy Williams of Taylor Made.

Bord said the new turf should start being put in May 13, and it should be finished in time for fall sports.
