West Virginia University announced Thursday its plan to build a 1,100 bed multi-purpose development called University Park in the Evansdale area of Morgantown.

The public-private partnership, similar to University Place in Sunnyside that includes housing and retail amenities, would be located near the Health Sciences campus behind McDonald's on University Avenue, according to WVU. The development will also offer food and retail amenities.

The public-private $90 million development is the third and final phase of the current student housing master plan. University Park will replace current housing at Fieldcrest Hall and the Medical Center Apartments, both of which will be demolished, and Pierpont Apartments, where the lease will not be renewed.  The development will encompass approximately seven acres of land north of University Avenue and located along Harding Avenue and Oakland Street, and stretching along Country Club Road behind the McDonald's restaurant.

WVU purchased the property Thursday for $12.2 million from MJR Evansdale Development LLC and various related entities, according to WVU. WVU expects the total property acquisition to cost nearly $15 million after purchasing smaller properties in the area. The development is expected to be ready by fall 2015.
