Are middle schoolers across West Virginia ‘money smart?' Prove it.

Money Smart Week is a public awareness campaign promoting financial literacy and will be observed April 20-27. Organizers currently are accepting essays from students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades.

The topic asks students to think about the three biggest financial decisions they will make in their lives and what makes them big. Students are asked to pick one decision and describe the steps they would take to prepare for that decision.

Students are encouraged to conduct research and discuss the importance of budgeting and financial planning with other students, teachers, friends or family members. The contest deadline is April 12.

The grand prize winner will receive a $750 SMART529 college savings plan and a Kindle Fire. Other prizes will be awarded to first and second place finalists in each grade and to the grand prize winner's teacher.
