REYNOLDSVILLE -

The city of Salem offered a concealed carry class on Wednesday.

The state requires anyone who wants to carry a concealed weapon to take a class.

Wednesday was the first day of the class, which involves classroom work.

Salem Police Chief Al Swiger said the classroom work is the most important part of the class.

"There are a lot of fundamentals that you need to learn. I could hand you a gun and you might shoot the guy standing beside you but he goes over the safety things, over the gun, how to hold it right. There's a lot more to it than just shooting, especially with the automatic over the revolver," said Swiger.

The students will get to practice on the shooting range on Thursday before receiving their certificates.
