The Webster County Sheriff's Department arrested a man after deputies said he stabbed another man on Thursday morning.

Deputy Jack Cutlip said it happened just after 4:30 a.m. at a house on Grand Avenue in Cowen.

Gary Key, 56, of Cowen stabbed John Mills, 54 in the neck with the intent to kill him, while Mills was asleep on the couch, according to a criminal complaint document.

Key fled the scene, but he was arrested by deputies soon after. Key is charged with attempted murder.

AirEvac flew Mills to CAMC General Hospital. Cutlip said doctors had to remove the knife from Mills' neck.

The hospital is reporting that Mills is still "under evaluation," but authorities said he was in the ICU in critical condition.

Key is in the Central Regional Jail with bail set at $500,000.
