MORGANTOWN -

On Thursday, Mon General Hospital held an open house for the "rebirth" of its Hazel Ruby McQuain Birth Center. its goal is to make the mother and father feel more at home instead of like they are in a hospital.

"It's very warm. It's very inviting," said Shannon Holliday, an expectant mother. "I really enjoy the fact that they have birthing pools, so you can actually go in and relax."

The number of newborn deliveries at Mon General Hospital has doubled since 2004. CEO Darryl Duncan said that was one of the reasons to update the birth center.

"We outgrew our old space, so we needed to fix that. So this is 16 LDRP, which is labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum," said Duncan. "So mothers can delivery in the room and stay over night and in rooming with the baby. The baby can stay in the same room, it's a very warm and inviting."

Rooms also include a pull out couch, if family members want to sleep over, and a Jacuzzi tub in each bathroom.

The open house showcased the new facility including the new C-section operating room now located on the same floor.

"I'm thinking back when my children were born and it was a complete different time period," said Senator Joe Manchin. "Now it's more of a true family celebration and event, which is what it should be. And they're accommodating that which is the beautiful thing."

Shannon Holliday is an expectant mother, who will be giving birth in one of the new rooms in September.

"I would tell people that it's a very friendly environment and with the new rooms and renovations," said Holliday. "I highly recommend it."

The facility will be open and taking new patients on April 20.
