Authorities responded to the scene of a fatal ATV accident in Barbour County on Tuesday afternoon.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. off Route 20 in Peeltree, near the Barbour-Upshur County line, according to 911 officials.

The Barbour County Sheriff's Department said the rider, identified as Larry E. Garrett, 64 of Volga, was declared dead at the scene by a medical examiner.

The sheriff's department said Garrett was riding an ATV in the backyard of a home and apparently lost control of the ATV, which overturned and came to a rest in a creek.

The sheriff's department is investigating.

The Philippi Fire Department, Warren District Fire Department, and Barbour County EMS also responded to the accident.
