Local Runner Finishes Boston Marathon 40 Minutes Before Explosions

Posted: Updated:

A local runner is speaking out about her experience running in the Boston Marathon Monday.

Nicole Lemal, 28, finished the race less than an hour before the bombs went off.

This was Lemal's fourth marathon, and she finished the Boston Marathon in three hours and 24 minutes, 40 minutes ahead of when the bombs went off.

She was with her mother in the "family reunion" area when the explosions happened.

"I heard a really loud bang, and I thought, ‘I don't know what else that could be, but it sounded like a bomb.' It was just such an eerie feeling to hear that, and then to hear the same noise three or four seconds later. Right away I could tell something was seriously wrong," said Lemal. "My first thought when I actually heard the two sounds was, ‘Is this another 9/11?'"

Lemal said she doesn't want the suspects of the explosions to get any satisfaction.

"Nothing could keep me away from coming back to Boston and running that race. It's too special of a marathon and too wonderful of a city. I don't want anything to deter me or anyone else from going back there," Lemal said.

Lemal lives in Morgantown and ran cross country and track for West Virginia University.
