Fairmont City Council 'Discouraged' with Extended 'Home Rule' Pilot Program Restrictions

Posted: Updated:

Fairmont City Council has worked for months to join the state's Home Rule pilot program.

Four West Virginia cities, including Bridgeport, participated in the initial five-year phase.

The legislature has passed an extension of the program, but with several restrictions.

Fairmont City Manager Jay Rogers said joining the program would allow Fairmont to make decisions more efficiently, but the restrictions are discouraging.

"It's disappointing. It's disappointing that, we talked a lot the last couple of days about it. It's like your parents saying we trust you to go but we are going to go with you just in case," Rogers said.

City Council will now discuss what steps it will take next.
