Clarksburg City Council Opposes Closure of USPS Distribution Facility

Posted: Updated:

Earlier this month, the United States Postal Service announced it was closing its Processing and Distribution Center on Emily Drive in Clarksburg.

On Thursday night, Clarksburg City Council made an announcement of its own: it will fight to keep the facility open.

Council members approved a resolution reiterating the city's support for the continued operation of the facility.

Council said the post office is a vital part of the community and that its closure would adversely affect more than 100 employees. Mayor Patsy Trecost doesn't want people lose their jobs.

"The people who work there are our friends and family, not just in Clarksburg, but all over Harrison County and the region. We don't want to see that enforced. So the impact for us of course is traffic flow, and at the same time we realize that the post office is cutting back," said Trecost.

Councilwoman Margaret Bailey urged the public to contact local legislators to try to keep the facility open.

Council will deliver its resolution to local senators and congressional representatives, who will pass its message along in Washington.
