HUNTINGTON – Marshall University has awarded a $16.35 million contract for construction of a long-proposed indoor practice facility to be located adjacent to Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

Meeting Thursday, the members of the Marshall Board of Governors unanimously awarded the contract to J&H Reinforcing and Structural Erectors of Portsmouth, Ohio, which submitted the low bid on the work. J&J was one of seven companies that bids on constructing the building, which will house a 120-yard turf field and a 300-meter track. Also included are shells for a student-athlete academic support center and a sports medicine translational research center, which are still under design.

The low bid on the contract came in approximately $50,000 less than the university had estimated.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the project is scheduled at 2 p.m. Friday, April 26, the day before the annual Green-White Game. Construction is expected to start with the next 30 to 60 days.

The indoor practice facility will be constructed on the site of MU's former soccer field, no long needed now that a new soccer stadium is under construction at the site of the recently demolished Veterans Memorial Field.

The total price tag for construction of the indoor practice facility and the soccer stadium is $30 million. University officials have said that $10 million of that will come from bond revenues with the bonds to be repaid through a ticket surcharge. An additional $20 million is to come from private donations, with $15 million of that already raised or pledged.
