REEDSVILLE -

If you have planting left to do, or are looking to pick up a few flowers, a trip to Reedsville could help support people with disabilities.

Tuesday, the Preston County Workshop opened its greenhouse for the season.

Since 1977, the workshop has help employ people with disabilities who often struggle to find jobs.

"I felt I wasn't adequate enough to hold a job, in any location at all," said Alicia Bowman, an employee of the Preston County Workshop. "Really my self esteem was low, there was depression, you know you just don't have self-confidence. And this has changed all that."

Legally blind, Bowman's story is like so many others. A career as a receptionist in the medical field her disability left her discouraged and frustrated.

"Being a visioned person all my life, and then losing my vision it's really hard for me to try to express that ‘no I can't see that,' or ‘I can't visualize that' as much as I'd like to," she said.

The non-profit employs around 40 people and has a number of jobs from industrial create building, to a greenhouse. It offers valuable training to workers.

"They receive on the job training, safety, working together with other individuals, a skill, attendance, punctuality, and that betters them to go out in the public and find a job that betters themselves and make more money," said executive director John Hyre.

"It keeps up my self esteem," Bowman said. "It gets me out and around people. It makes me appreciate other with disabilities. I can truthfully say it's been a life changing experience for me."

The greenhouse is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
