NASA Teaches Aviation to Middle School Students

Flying model airplanes is a favorite hobby for many, but local middle school students found out they could have a job doing that hobby.

NASA organized an introduction to aviation workshop Tuesday for Philippi-area middle school students. The students learned aviation basics, and saw the FSU Cessna land at Fairmont Airport. They then went Meredith Field for a more realistic experience.

"Out here, we're flying them as a simulator, as if we're flying a big ol' plane, but before we came here, we took a simulation test on the computer, and I crashed a few times," said Nathaniel Poling, a student at Feed My Sheep Christian School.

They may just look like toys, but the model airplanes cost up to $100.
