Monongalia County Creates New App To Keep Residents Informed

MORGANTOWN -

The Monongalia County Homeland Security Emergency Management Agency has created an app for people who use smart phones or electronics each day to make information readily available to residents.

There's an app for almost everything these days and the Emergency Management Agency thought it was time it had one, too.

"I've never known local entities or organizations to produce an app like that," said Wes Chancey, a Morgantown resident. "But I think it would be extremely useful. I'm glad to see that the city would be shifting towards giving electronic information."

The app is free and can give you information on everything from local weather and traffic patterns to evacuation routes in the event of a disaster.

"Social media is high, Internet, cell phones," said Michael Wolfe, the Director of Monongalia County Emergency Management Agency. "So we thought this would be a good way that we could kind of put all of our information in one spot for people to go to when they needed to know what was going on."

Wolfe said the app allows residents to get information about what's happening straight from the source. The user can also connect directly to Twitter, Facebook, or the agency's main web site.

"Rumor control is one of the biggest things that we have to deal with," said Wolfe. "Now that social media is such a big deal in people's lives we wanted to make sure that we had a place that people could come to quickly to get reliable, accurate information."

Chancey said the app will make getting local information easier.

"Yeah, I would absolutely download that app," said Chancey. "Like I said I get information through my electronic devices and if I could get information about things locally here, that would be fantastic."

The app is only available on Apple Products but they are hoping to get a Google based app as soon as possible. If you want to download the app search "MCHSEMA" in the app store.
