Morgantown Bridge in Danger of Closing

MORGANTOWN -

A bridge in Morgantown may be closed pending inspection.

More than a decade ago the state mandated that Hartman Run Bridge in Morgantown undergo a yearly inspection.

County commission said it's been more than two years since the last inspection and the state hasn't responded to requests to do so.

Commission voted Tuesday to pay for the inspection, which it said had always been done by the state, and will close the bridge if necessary.

"Priority has to be the safety of the public and the people going over that bridge. Granted, it's going to be an inconvenience, and maybe more than an inconvenience, but public lives and safety have to take priority," said commissioner Bill Bartolo.

The county said replacing the bridge could cost up to $1 million, adding that years ago the commission in place set $400,000 aside to replace the bridge, but the project fell through.

Several years ago the county put up netting underneath the bridge after receiving complaints of falling concrete.
