City of Buckhannon Passes LGBT Protections

Posted: Updated:

The city of Buckhannon has joined several other cities in West Virginia that prohibit employment discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Lawmakers tabled a House bill that would have added sexual orientation to the protected categories in the state's human rights act during the last legislative session.

Cities like Buckhannon want lawmakers to amend those protection categories on a statewide basis.

Mayor Kenneth Davidson said everyone deserves a voice.

"You think what you will about anyone's choice of lifestyle, but if we take away the rights of any citizen then everyone's is going to be jeopardized," Davidson said.

Buckhannon passed a resolution last Thursday.

It joins Charleston, Morgantown, Lewisburg, and Harpers Ferry in adding sexual orientation to the protected categories.
