Bridgeport Farmers Market Receives Grant From Waste Management

BRIDGEPORT -

The Bridgeport Farmers Market officially opened for the summer on Sunday. The first market of the season was a successful one with 17 vendors, despite cool and windy conditions.

In addition to opening day, the Bridgeport Farmers Market received a special grant: the Think Green Grant from Waste Management.

"Individuals are nominated for this grant, there are only 50 grants awarded throughout the United States and Bridgeport Farmers Market was one that received them," said Amanda Cunningham, with Waste Management of West Virginia.

The grant is for $4,000. The farmers market will use the money to think green and implement recycling at the market.

"It will help deliver educational programs. People can come to the market and learn about recycling and learn about composting, we can get our program together to receive those items," said Scott Duarte, with the Bridgeport Farmers Market. "We can help to create a location to take the compostable materials to and work it into our system; possibly use it in our own gardens and landscaping here at Charles Pointe."

Cunningham said the farmers market was the perfect candidate for the Think Green Grant.

"I think that they're a hub for growth in our community. They offer small businesses a place to sell their products and promote themselves. They also teach us about healthy living and sustainability by using local produce, local meats, and local products," explained Cunningham.

Duarte said the Bridgeport Farmers Market Board of Directors is thrilled to receive the grant, and make the market even better than it already is.

"It brings folks together, it teaches them about eating locally, eating healthy. If you look around there's a wide variety of things here. We artisans, we have education areas, and you can buy food that's grown locally in your community all in one place," Duarte said.

The Bridgeport Farmers Market is open every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and located behind building 600 at Charles Pointe.
