Lewis-Gilmer E-911 Center to Provide Basic First Aid Care Instructions Over Phone

Posted: Updated:

Emergency medical personnel in Lewis and Gilmer Counties soon will have more support when responding to emergencies.

Starting Wednesday, the Lewis-Gilmer E-911 Center will begin providing instruction for basic first aid care to people over the phone.

The 911 operators are all trained to provide that advice following a strict procedure.

They said it will be a big help to more remote patients.

"For both counties, Lewis and Gilmer, we're in a rural area, it takes us, a lot of times, thirty to forty minutes to arrive at somebody's house and to be able to offer them better services," said Chris McCall, of the Lewis County EMS.

Anyone calling 911 in Lewis and Gilmer Counties will have the option to receive what help he or she can from the operators while an ambulance is on the way.
