The husband of Barbour County's prosecuting attorney is free on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond after admitting that he drugged his wife in September 2012.

West Virginia State Police arrested William Francis Poling, Jr., 42, of Moatsville, on March 21 for putting a tablet of Ambien in his wife's drink, which she unknowingly consumed, according to the criminal complaint.

Once his wife, Leckta Poling, was asleep, he obtained her cell phone and attempted to gain access to her cell phone activity, messages, and emails.

William Poling told state police that he and his wife had been married about 19 years and that he had developed a suspicion about the stability of their marriage.  He is facing a misdemeanor domestic battery charge.

Monongalia County Magistrate Hershel Mullins has been assigned as the special magistrate on the case and Lee Anne Hawkins of Marion County is the special prosecutor. A hearing date has not been set, according to Magistrate Mullins' office.
