Children with Apraxia have a hard time getting their brains and muscles to work together.

Advocates for those children have organized the first-ever Apraxia Awareness Day, May 14, to help generate communication about the neurological disorder that makes it hard for children to communicate.

Apraxia is one of the most severe speech and communication problems in children, according to information from the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America, or CASANA.

Children affected by it have difficulty making the precise and specific movements through the tongue, lips, jaw and palate that are necessary to produce clear speech – basically a miscommunication between the child's brain and muscles. The disorder also can affect the child's ability to eat.

"Families have truly longed to have a day recognizing the struggles faced by their children," CASANA Executive Director Sharon Gretz said in a news release.

Gretz said a statement acknowledging Apraxia Awareness Day was scheduled to be placed in the Congressional record of the U.S. House of Representatives as well as among several state legislative bodies.

The non-profit organization is based in Pittsburgh, and it raises awareness while providing support and information for families as well as funding and supporting CAS research, according to information from CASANA.

CASANA is taking to social media in honor of the day to raise awareness among the public, and at apraxia-kids.org the day will be marked with an online quiz, contests and a webinar for questions and answers.
