CHARLESTON, WV -

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin announced May 14 the appointment of Mark Matkovich as acting state tax commissioner, effective May 15. Matkovich most recently was general counsel to the cabinet secretary for the Department of Revenue.

Matkovich started his career in government in 1996, according to a news release from Tomblin's office, serving as Beckley city attorney, staff attorney for the West Virginia Senate and as general counsel to the Senate majority leader.

"With his vast knowledge and experience, Mark will be a tremendous asset to the State Tax Department," Tomblin said in the news release. "I'm pleased Mark has accepted this opportunity, and I look forward to working with him."

Matkovich received his bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Albright College and his law degree from the University of New Hampshire. He and his wife, Karen, live in Hurricane.

Tomblin named Charles O. Lorensen Secretary of Revenue Jan. 24, 2011, and in that capacity, he is state budget director, the governor's designee for the Investment Management Board and the Board of Treasury Investments, and he also chairs the Retail Liquor Licensing Board.

He is listed on the state's website as acting commissioner for the West Virginia State Tax Department, where it states he began serving as tax commissioner in January 2013. He served as commissioner previously from 1989-1990.
