The development of the M-70 Marine Highway, which includes the Ohio River, was discussed at a workshop May 13 at Marshall University.

The workshop was sponsored by the Rahall Transportation Institute and the West Virginia Public Port Authority in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration. It focused on assessing the potential for using container-on-vessel transportation on rivers in West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana and Missouri.

More than 60 participants with representatives from the Port of Pittsburgh to the Port of Kansas City attended. Speeches and discussion sessions covered infrastructure gaps and capabilities, environmental benefits of inland navigation and funding on maritime transportation-related issues.

The next steps in planning for M-70 include the establishment of a governance committee to begin organizing stakeholders in order to secure future federal maritime transportation funding.
