While the debate about guns continues in Washington, one West Virginia state park is celebrating the opening of a new shooting range.

The Sporting Clay and Shooting Facility at Canaan Valley State Park in Davis opened May 17, but won't be open to the public until May 25. According to information from the governor's office, the shooting range is a five-stand, clay target field. Shooters can fire five rounds from a shotgun from each shooting position, for a total of 25 shots per individual round. The trap can be set for easy flight paths, or on automatic for more advanced shooters. The launcher fires clay discs in a variety of angles and heights and the trap resets itself automatically after each shot.

"The sport of trap shooting is popular and this provides another outdoor activity that visitors and guests at Canaan Valley Resort can enjoy," said Frank Jezioro, director of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, in an earlier news release.

Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and longtime supporter of recreational shooting, was on-hand at the ribbon cutting ceremony May 17. He said the range is yet another reason why families should visit the park.

"Recreational shooting ranges and West Virginia state parks are a natural fit," Manchin said. "This is a wonderful new addition to Canaan Valley State Park and another great destination (for) families to spend their vacations in West Virginia. If you like outdoor activities, we've got camping, hiking, fishing, cross country and downhill skiing, leaf-peeping, wildlife, tubing and now Sporting Clays shooting. I encourage all sportsmen and their families and friends to visit this new facility."

Other new sporting ranges across the state include the Monongalia County Rifle Range, the Cacapon State Park Sporting Field, the Kumbrabon State Forest Rifle Range and the Dense Run Rifle Range that should be completed this summer.
