DOH Burns Debris from Superstorm Sandy in Barbour County

Posted: Updated:

Some burning in Barbour County caused concern for residents in the Ford Run area.

The Division of Highways contracted with Lincoln Leasing to burn debris from Superstorm Sandy.

Officials said the company got a permit from the state for the burning.

Residents said the smoke was too strong and was spreading.

The DEP said putting the fires out may have been easier said than done.

"Now we just have to get water here. Unfortunately it's going to take a lot of outside fire departments to try and help us. The Office of Emergency Services have been working hard trying to get some people," said Brian Tephaback of the West Virginia DEP.

Crews from Philippi, Belington and Junior were working Tuesday to put the fires out with help from heavy equipment.

The fires were put out just after 7 p.m. Tuesday.
