U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Teaches Marion County Students About Boat Safety

Posted: Updated:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said more than 80 million Americans will go boating this year.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is teaching Marion County students, including Pleasant Valley Elementary students, about boat safety.

It's using a robot name Coastie to teach them about the importance of life jackets, and to answer any questions.

"He acts like a kid. It makes it more comfortable for them. they just simply enjoy it. It's like a cartoon character. If you go to an amusement park, the first thing they go to is the character," said Jeff Sencindiver, W.Va. State Liaison.

Coastie will also visit White Hall, Watson, East Park, and Blackshere Elementary Schools.
