Three Rivers Festival Kicks Off In Fairmont

FAIRMONT -

Even with the weather being on the rainy side, carnival rides were in full swing, and hundreds of people came out on Thursday for Fairmont's annual Three Rivers Festival.

The Cross's have come to the festival every Memorial Day weekend for the last 9 years. They said they couldn't miss the parade. They come for the bands.

"My sister is a member of the marching band and from Fairmont Senior and I'm an alumni," said Katie Cross. "So it's a big deal for our family to come out and watch the parade."

It's not only local people who enjoy the festivities. Joey Chestnut is a competitive eater who came all the way from San Jose, California for one reason.

"For the last three years, they've been holding this pepperoni roll contest, and it's been getting more and more competition, and there's going to be seven of the top 10 competitive eaters in the world here," said Chestnut. "I just had to come out and beat them all."

The competitive eating contest is on Saturday. There are numerous activities going on at Palatine Park the entire weekend.

Betsy Cross said that even with all the fun events, she hoped the weekend would teach her grandson what Memorial Day is really about.

"I think Memorial Day, to me, means freedom," said Betsy Cross. "And it's what our guys have given to us so that we can be free and be here for this particular parade and festival."

The rain did come down pretty hard toward the end of Thursday evening, when the festival kicked off. But the crowd came prepared and continued to enjoy the parade, food booths, and carnival rides.
