Summer is right around the bend and the footwear of choice always seems to be flip flops.

With your foot being exposed to the elements they are not the safest thing for your feet.

Not only do they let germs and other bacteria onto your foot area, doctors said flip flops do not have adequate support and can cause blisters which lead to infection.

"If you are going to use flip flops you want to at least have good hygiene and spray them down with disinfectant. The most important thing to remember is that they weren't meant for daily use. They were meant to go from the pool to the shower or the beach. Most of them are flimsily made," said Dr. David Lawrence, Mon General Hospital.

Dr. Lawrence did want people to remember that there are other important things to worry about in the summer.

Including making sure you wear the correct protective gear for recreational activities.
