Census Data Shows Morgantown Population Continues to Grow

MORGANTOWN -

Anyone who drives through Morgantown during rush hour knows there are a lot of people there.

The Census Bureau's population estimates are right on par with Morgantown's comprehensive plan. The city manager believes that it's directly related to the jobs and opportunities provided by West Virginia University.

Morgantown's population has grown by more than 1,000 people from the last population estimate.

Katie Peters is a student at WVU who said that with more people coming into the city, better traffic routes are a must.

"I think if they keep doing that, making quicker routes," said Peters. "For example, University Avenue in front of the Mountainlair gets so hectic. If somehow they could find a way to open that up or to make alternative routes that aren't through downtown."

That is only one of the things City Manager Jeff Mikorski said needs to be looked at.

"The businesses around the university will continue to grow," said Mikorski. "We're going to see a lot more needs for transportation, for police services, ambulance services, hospital services. So all of that needs to be looked at and prepared for as the population continues to grow in this area."

Morgantown's population is continuing to grow and one person that might be added to the total for life is Peters. She said she wouldn't mind planting her roots here.

"I absolutely love it here," said Peters. "I heard that when you grow up around here it's really laid back. Where I'd like to raise a family somewhere like that versus a big city or a really small town."

The city is believed to grow by more than 40,000 people over the next 20 years.
