MONONGAH -

CONSOL Energy has given the Monongah Youth Club a grant to make some improvements.

The club used the $9,000 to purchase a new scoreboard at Higginbotham Field.

Chuck Shaynak, the senior vice-president of CONSOL Energy Northern West Virginia Operations, said the company likes to donate to local organizations like the youth club, because it makes the area more family-friendly.

"Our employees live and work in this area, and we want to encourage them to stay in this area. We'd like nothing more than to recruit our employees from the local area, and have them grow their families up. A good way to do that is to provide for their children, because that's tomorrow's future," said Shaynak.

Four teams use Higginbotham Field.

The scoreboard was unveiled, and Shaynak threw out the first pitch at the game on Tuesday.
